Kat strikes for five points as hockey Martlets win 51st straight over Stingers

Katia Clement-Heydra
Box Score
MONTREAL -- Katia Clement-Heydra scored five points and linemate Gabrielle Davidson netted a natural hat-trick as No.1-ranked McGill skated to a 5-1 conquest over Concordia in women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday.

The result extended McGill's win streak to 33 regular season games and also marked the 51st consecutive victory over their cross-town rivals since the Stingers last won a 2-1 decision on Feb. 5, 2006. The Martlets own a 62-36-3 lifetime mark against Concordia since the CIS sanctioned the sport in 1997.

The Martlets outshot Concordia 35-15 and went 2-for-5 on the power-play, while kiling off four of five shorthanded situations.

Clement-Heydra opened the scoring at the 30-second mark of the second period. The Stingers responded less than six minutes later when Alyssa Sherrrard connected on a power-play.

However, Davidson was a one-woman show, exploding for goals at 7:28, 10:41 and 13:11, all assisted by Clement-Heydra, to crush Concordia's hopes of an upset. Davidson upped her CIS-leading goal total to a dozen in just seven games.

Clement-Heydra closed out the soiree with her sixth goal of the season at 15:21 of the final stanza.

Andrea Weckman of Kitchener, Ont., made 14 saves for the win. The fifth-year senior is now 3-0 on the campaign and ran her unblemished record to 18-0 lifetime in regular season play.

Concordia 'keeper Carolanne Lavoie-Pilon was credited with 30 saves and took the loss, dropping to 1-5-0.

McGill, which sits atop the RSEQ conference with a 7-0 record, improved to 12-5 overall, including a 3-4 mark against NCAA squads. They will try to even that record when they host the St. Lawrence University Saints from Canton, N.Y. on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The contest is part of the Martlets homecoming weekend and will be preceded by an "oldtimers" game at 12:30 p.m.

The Saints play in the 12-team ECAC conference, where they have a 4-2 record. Overall, they are 5-7, including a 7-0 victory over the Montreal Carabins on Oct. 8. Last year, SLU defeated McGill 5-4 in overtime in Canton. The last Martlets victory over SLU was a 2-1 decision on the road, Sept. 30, 2011.

The cellar-dwelling Stingers (1-5) will host second-place Ottawa (5-2) on Sunday afternoon.
