Box Score
MONTREAL – Gabrielle Davidson, a sophomore from Pte. Claire, Que., scored the deciding goal in a post-overtime shootout as No.1-ranked McGill survived a scare and came away with a 3-2 victory over Carleton in women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Sunday.

The win extended McGill's win streak to 32 consecutive games in regular season play, dating back to a 4-3 overtime shootout loss to Carleton on Jan. 22, 2012. Since then, the Martlets have posted a dozen straight wins over Carleton.

McGill outshot the Ravens by a sizeable 60-10 margin, including 25-5 in the second period, but had a tough time solving goaltender Eri Kiribuchi, a 5-foot-2 senior from the Czech Republic, who made 57 saves in a losing cause.

"We controlled the play, had a ton of scoring chances and were all over them but they blocked a lot of shots and their goalie was outstanding, "said a relieved Peter Smith, head coach of the Martlets. "She's small but quick and moves from side-to-side as good as any goalie I've seen."

After a scoreless opening period, McGill took a 2-1 lead in the second on goals from Katia Clement-Heydra and defenceman Adrienne Crampton, sandwiched around a Carleton marker by Chelsea Lefebvre. Leslie Oles drew assists on both McGill goals.

When Mackenzie Coney tied the score at 2-2 only 75 seconds into the third period, it looked like McGill's lengthy win streak might be in jeopardy.

In the shootout, Sydnie MacDonald gave Carleton a 1-0 advantage but Oles scored on a nice shot that banked in off the goalpost and Davidson tallied the winner on a deke and nifty wrist shot. McGill netminder Taylor Hough then stoned Julie Vaillancourt to seal the victory. Hough, who was only beaten once in five shootout attempts, was officially credited with eight saves on 10 shots in the game for the victory.

The Ravens drew 22 of 28 penalty minutes called. McGill went 2-for-11 on the power-play and erased all three shorthanded situations.

Carleton (1-6-1) will host the No.2-ranked Montreal Carabins (2-2) on Nov. 16.

McGill, which improved to 6-0 in RSEQ league play, will confront Concordia (1-4-0) for the first time this season when the cross-town rivals cross paths at McConnell Arena on Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. The next McGill-Concordia game after that is scheduled on Nov. 29 and has been moved to a morning start time of 10:30 am to accommodate a 'Score with School" promotion with the Lester B. Pearson School Board, which has purchased about 900 tickets for the event.

MARTLET MURMURS: The Martlets will host St. Lawrence University, an NCAA Div. 1 school from Canton, N.Y., in a non-conference game on Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. The game will be part of the team's alumni homecoming weekend, which is being coordinated by former Martlets captain Shauna Denis and Alyssa Cecere… An "old-timers" game is slated to precede the McGill-SLU contest at 12:30 pm…  SLU is the alma mater of Chelsea Grills, who was appointed full-time to the Martlets coaching staff over the summer. Grills was not behind the McGill bench this week as she was working with the coaching staff of the Canadian under-18 squad at a training camp in Calgary… The Martlets now owns a 75-1-1 lifetime record against Carleton, outscoring them 409-52 since the Ravens joined the Quebec conference in 1999.
