MONTREAL — The schedule for this weekend's Canadian University Rowing Association's national championships has been announced. The event, slated for Nov. 2-3, will be hosted by McGill University at the site the Olympic rowing basin on Ile Notre-Dame, just south of Montreal.
This event will be the largest championship in CURA history with over 332 student-athletes registered to compete from 25 universities, ranging from Victoria, B.C., to Antigonish, N.S.
The schedule, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, features 12 events, divided equally between men and women, ranging from lightweight singles to heavyweight eights.
Saturday's time trials will determine seeding for the top six boats advancing to Sunday's finals. Races will consist of a two-kilometre sprint. Scoring in the team standings is based on the finishing position in each event, with 15, 20, 25 or 40 points up for grabs, depending on the race, awarded to the top boats.
McGill's best medal hope is the women's pair of
Kalyna Franko of Toronto and
Luce Bourbeau from the Madeleine Islands in eastern Quebec, who teamed up to strike gold at last year's championship in Victoria. The McGill crew is coming off a recent run of solid results at the OUA championships – where they captured three bronze medals – and the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta, where they finished second in the women's fours.

The competing schools include Alberta, UBC, Brock, Calgary, Carleton, Dalhousie, École de technologie supérieure, Fraser Valley, Guelph, Laurentian, Manitoba, McGill, McMaster, Montréal, UOIT, Ottawa, Queen's, Regina, RMC, Saskatchewan, St. Francis Xavier, Toronto, Trent, Victoria and Western.
Last year, UBC hosted the competition in Burnaby, B.C., where Victoria won their third consecutive CURA women's championship and Brock claimed the men's title. McGill last hosted the regatta in 2004 when Brock University won the men's title and UBC hoisted the women's banner.
