Box Score
MONTREAL --
Katia Clement-Heydra scored a pair of shorthanded goals, including the game-winner on a penalty shot, as McGill skated to a 5-3 triumph over Montreal in CIS women's hockey at CEPSUM Arena, Sunday.
McGill, now 2-0 in RSEQ play, has won 28 consecutive regular season contests since a 4-3 overtime shootout loss at home to Carleton on Jan. 22, 2012. They improved to 29-2 in 31 lifetime meetings against the Carabins.
In a rare match-up of the top teams in the nation -- the No.2 ranked Martlets left no doubts and easily unseated the No.1-ranked defending national champs. It was the first rendez-vous between the bitter rivals since the Carabins shocked division-leading McGill with a 2-1 series victory in the RSEQ best-of-three conference final last spring, en route to claiming their first-ever CIS title.
This time, the Martlets came hungry for revenge and outshot Montreal by a stunning 57-19 margin, including a losided 24-3 edge in the final period. McGill led 2-1 after one and 4-3 after two.
"We had a good all-round effort and stuck with the game-plan the whole way through," said
Peter Smith, in his 14th season as head coach at McGill. "I guess it wouldn't be inaccurate to say that there wasn't a thought of retribution from last spring. Our team wants to to play at a high level in every game but there was probably a little extra incentive out there today, There was no trouble in getting the girls focussed for this one."
Clement-Heydra, an industrial relations senior from St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., set a single-game school record with the two shorthanded markers, scoring both on breakaways to put McGill ahead 3-1 and 4-2.
"Katia had a real strong game and really embraced her leadership role with a great on-ice performance," said Smith. "She was very dynamic out there, real sharp on both sides of the puck in the game. She played hard and was rewarded for it."
Other Martlets on scoresheet included senior
Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., sophomore
Gabrielle Davidson of Pte. Claire, Que., and junior
Stefanie Pohlod of Calgary.
Josianne Legault, a senior from Granby, Que., tallied both goals for the Carabins, whose suffered their first defeat of the young campaign and fell to 3-1-0.
Winning netminder
Taylor Hough, a sophomore from Toronto, turned aside 16 of 19 shots between the pipes for McGill.
UdeM veteran goalie Elodie Robert-Sirois was saddled with the loss despite a 52-save performance.
The Carabins will play at Concordia (0-3) on Nov. 1, while McGill will travel to Ottawa for an afternoon affair against Carleton (1-3-0) on Nov. 2.
