Martlet Hockey vs. Quinnipiac (Away)

HAMDEN, CONN. -- Kelly Babstock, a third-year forward from Mississauga, Ont., scored the game-winner and added an assist as the Quinnipiac Bobcats skated to a 4-1 triumph over visiting McGill in women's hockey exhibition play at High Point Solutions Arena, Saturday.

The Bobcats, an NCAA Div. 1 team that features 11 Canadians on their roster, improved to 12-7-2 overall, extended their win streak to six while putting an end to McGill's 14-game win streak and dropping the Martlets record to 19-9-0 overall.

Katia Clement-Heydra, a junior from St. Bruno, Que., tallied the lone McGill marker with her 19th goal in 18 games overall.

Quinnipiac, which had a 33-17 edge in shots, led 3-1 after the opening period and 4-1 after two.

"We didn't play full-out for 60 minutes and didn't adjust to a faster-paced game quick enough," said McGill head coach Peter Smith. "They have a very good first line, with national calibre players and we didn't make the necessary adjustments."

Sophomore Nicole Kosta, also from Mississauga, drove the game's first goal home at 6:03 in the first period. Babstock, the ECAC Hockey's leading scorer with 40 points (20 goals, 20 assists), swung the puck up to rookie rearguard Kristen Tamberg of Toronto, at the point, whose rebound kicked over to Kosta waiting unguarded at the far side post to give the Bobcats a quick 1-0 lead.

Quinnipiac took a a 2-0 advantage at 12:27 of the second goal when freshman Nicole Brown of Oshawa, Ont., pushed the puck up ice to Babstock, who patiently waited before roofing a laser beam wrist shot from the faceoff circle over an unsuspecting Taylor Salisbury of Surrey, B.C., in the McGill net.

Just over two minutes later, rookie defenceman Cydney Roesler of Stittsville, Ont., connected on a power-play goal. The play started behind Salisbury's net as freshman Nicole Connery of Newmarket, Ont., and Brown played with the puck back-and-forth before locating Roesler at the point for a slapshot that beat Salisbury through several defenders in front of the crease.

McGill responded with a power-play goal of their own at 17:10 in the first as Clement-Heydra was on the receiving end of a nice combination passing play between Kelsie Moffatt of Pickering, Ont., and Michelle Daigneault of Hay River, NWT and converted after being left uncovered at the far post.

Tamberg made it 4-1 at 1:05 of the middle period when Swedish import Erica Uden Johansson fed blueliner Shelby Wignall of Hamilton, Ont., at the point and she relayed it to Tamberg. With senior Kristen Eklund of Barrington, R.I., screening Salisbury, the puck eluded the McGill 'keeper.

Senior goalie Victoria Vigilanti of Woodbridge, Ont., made 11 saves over the first two periods and registered the victory. Chelsea Laden, a junior from Lakeville, Minn., played the final stanza and was credited with five saves, including one on a 3-on-1 McGill rush.

Quinnipiac will resume ECAC play next week when they travel to Dartmouth and Harvard, on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

McGill, which owns a 2-7 record against NCAA opponents, will host the University of Connecticut Huskies (3-14-2) on Jan. 12 at 3 p.m. before resuming league action with a home game against the Montreal Carabins on Jan. 18.
