Martlet Hockey vs. Carleton (Away)

OTTAWA -- Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., scored three goals and added an assist as the No.1-ranked McGill University women's hockey team trounced Carleton 7-2 at the CU Ice Palace, Saturday.

The result extended their win streak to 21 against CIS opponents, including a 19-0 mark this season. The Martlets also improved their lifetime record against the Ravens to 69-1-1.

It was a rough and tumble affair that featured 19 penalties, including 12 to the Ravens, who had the pleasure of watching McGill's power-play unit connect on five of nine chances. Carleton replied on two of three PP chances.

McGill had a 40-14 advantage in shots, including a 17-4 edge in the opening frame.

Despite the lopsided shot total, it was the Gee-Gees who led after the first period. Defenceman Erin Beaver connected for a PP marker at 19:03.

Early in the second period, Clement-Heydra struck twice in 61 seconds and visions of her breaking the school record for the fastest hat-trick were re-lived.  She set that mark last week (Jan. 19), with a hat-trick in 118 seconds against the Ottawa Gee-Gees. But the third-year industrial relations major had to wait until the third period to complete the hat-trick, her third of the season and the team's seventh hat-trick performance in 33 games overall.

The Ravens had the audacity to tie the score at 2-2 when Kelsey vanderVeen, another blueliner, connected on another man-advantage situation at the midway mark of the second stanza.

That goal was like poking a stick in a beehive and resulted in a five-goal onslaught by the Martlets, including three in 56 seconds during the final stanza.

Rookie Gabrielle Davidson of Pte. Claire, Que., potted a pair on the power-play to make the score 4-2. Then Clement-Heydra added her 17th of the season at 10:35 of the third, followed by blueliner Kelsie Moffatt's first goal of the campaign at 11:08 and Chelsey Saunders, a senior from Ottawa, who rounded out the scoring at 11:31.

“We're such a momentum-type team and when we get on a roll, it's scary sometimes,” said McGill head coach Peter Smith, who improved his record to 352-126-31 overall in 13 seasons behind the Martlet bench. “There were so many penalties called that we didn't see a lot of 5-on-5 play and it took us a while to click. But in the third period, our puck possession and puck movement was very good.”

Freshman goalie Taylor Hough of Toronto, kicked aside 12 of 14 shots to collect her first career victory in her CIS regular season debut. A beleaguered Eri Kiribuchi (2-5),  who hails from the Czech Republic, was saddled with the loss after being beaten seven times on 33 shots,

MARTLET MURMURS: Davidson, who finished the game with four points, is the top-scoring rookie in the conference in both goals (11) and points (15)…  Linemate Melodie Daoust added four helpers and continues to lead the CIS scoring race with 17-29-46 in just 15 games. She sits four points ahead of Guelph rookie Amanda Parkins (19-23-42), who has played in eight more contests... Clement-Heydra is third among CIS leaders in both goals (17) and points (35)… Leslie Oles, who drew three minor penalties, was held pointless for just the second time this season. She is second in the nation in goals scored and owns an 18-12-30 record in a dozen games.
