Martlet Hockey vs. Ottawa (Home)
MONTREAL –
Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., scored four points, including a natural hat-trick with a school record three goals in 118 seconds as the No.1-ranked McGill Martlets cruised to a 6-1 victory over Ottawa in women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
The win, which clinched a playoff berth for the 16th straight year, improved McGill's unblemished record to 17-0 against CIS opponents and 13-0 in conference play. It was also their 27
th consecutive conquest over the Gee-Gees and enhanced their lifetime record against Ottawa to 72-12-7.
The Martlets got off to a quick 1-0 lead when defenceman
Brittney Fouracres of Calgary, scored before the game was two minutes old but Cindy Laurin of Hull, Que., evened the count at 1-1 when she connected on a Gee-Gees power-play.
Clement-Heydra, a 23-year-old industrial relations junior, broke the game open with second period markers at 4:15, 4:46 and 6:13. By the time the two-minute blitzkrieg was over, the Gee-Gees looked shell-shocked and were done like dinner.
"I had a good pre-game meal at Subway (restaurant)," said Clement-Heydra, who sits second the RSEQ scoring race and fourth in the nation with a 14-17-31 record in just 13 contests.
"She got a real good result from working very hard," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith of his third-year forward. "It's nice when the puck's going in for her but whether she had scored or not, she worked hard out there. She did a great job and it paid off."
Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., added her CIS-leading 16th of the season at 7:00 of the third period and
Erika Pyke, a sophomore centre from Spryfield, N.S., rounded out the scoring on the power-play at 15:52.
Daoust, a sophomore who won CIS rookie-of-the-year honours last season, also leads all CIS scorers with 39 points in 13 games. She has a three-point lead on Guelph's Amanda Perkins (15-21-36), who has played in eight more games.
McGill had a 41-13 edge in shots, including a 21-3 onslaught in the final frame.
"We had good jump in the game," said Smith. who improved to 350-126-31 lifetime behind the McGill bench. "When you play Ottawa, you have to play with some composure and move the puck well so that you don't get caught up. I thought our puck movement was good and our puck management was good too. I didn't like our shot total in the first period (9-7 for McGill) but we did a much better job of that in the second and third.
Andrea Weckman, a senior goaltender from Kitchener, Ont., made 11 saves in her fourth start of the season. She improved to 4-0 on the season and 19-7-2 lifetime in a McGill jersey.
The Martlets have a return engagement at Ottawa on Jan. 25 (at 7 p.m. and will stay in the nation's capital to play at Carleton the next night at 6 p.m.
