Lost 2-3 at Providence (NCAA) EXHIBITION
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Brooke Simpson of Boxborough, Mass., snapped a 2-2 deadlock with the game-winning goal at 5:58 of the third period as the Providence College women's ice hockey team opened its season Saturday, with a 3-2 win over visiting McGill at Schneider Arena.
Providence, an NCAA Div. 1 team in the Hockey East conference, has now won eight of nine lifetime meetings against the Martlets.
The Friars opened the scoring just 1:54 into the first period when senior Jessica Vella of Pickering, Ont., pounced on a turnover at the blue line and beat McGill netmnder Taylor Salisbury from the slot.
Freshman Courtney Kukowksi of Apple Valley, Minn., extended the Friars lead at 7:11, putting the puck right under the crossbar with a nifty backhanded shot.
McGill cut the lead in half on a power play at 6:24 of the middle period when Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., scored from the backdoor side of the crease after a pass from Leslie Oles, a juior from Beaconsfield, Que., The Martlets evened the score 10 minutes later on a breakaway goal from the speedy Oles.
The Friars used all three of their goaltenders in the game. Junior Nina Riley started and was replaced at the start of the second period by freshman Allie Morse. She gave way in the final stanza to freshman Sarah Bryant, who was credited with the victory. She stopped all seven shots faced.
Salisbury, a senior from Surrey, B.C., went the distance for McGill, except for the final 29 seconds when she was pulled in favour of an extra attacker. The Friars outshot the Martlets 25-20.Providence went 0-3 on the power play while the Martlets scored on one of their four opportunities.
McGill continues their road trip across the border when they play at Boston University on Sunday at 3 p.m. The will also travel to Canton, N.Y., on Wednesday to play the St. Lawrence Saints. The Friars begin their regular season with a home opener at Schneider Arena on Oct. 5 against Bemidji State.
