KINGSTON, Ont. - Katia Clément-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., scored three goals and added an assist as the McGill women's hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit and outlasted Guelph 6-4 at the Queen's Triangular Series, a three-team preseason tourney held at the Investa Centre on Gardiners Road in Kingston, Saturday.
It marked the Martlets first game against a CIS opponent after splitting a pair of exhibition games last week against two boys midget espoir teams from the Lac St. Louis region.
The Gryphons startled McGill with an early goal from Amanda Perkins of Kitchener, Ont., only 39 seconds after the opening faceoff and constructed a 4-2 lead by the eight-minute mark of the second period, on goals by Aven Nooren of Aylmer, Que., Christine Grant of Mississauga, Ont., and Jessica Pinkerton of Oshawa, Ont.
"We didn't get off to a great start," said McGill head coach Peter Smith, in a bit of an understatement. "But we showed a lot of character in coming from behind. Now we need to work on showing that character from the start. That's why we play a tough preseason schedule, to face these types of challenges."
Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., sparked the McGill rally with her second of the game, on the power-play, to make it 4-3 midway through the middle period.
In the final stanza, Clément-Heydra, who had evened the score at 1-1 at 2:21 of the first period, struck twice in a four-minute span. She tied the score at 11:45 and potted the eventual game-winner, set up by Oles, at 15:10.
Linemate Gabrielle Davidson, a freshman from Pointe Claire, Que., added an insurance marker with 66 seconds remaining to finish the soiree with four points, matching the same point totals posted by Oles and Clément-Heydra.
McGill, which had a 36-34 edge in shots, went 2-for-5 on the power-play and killed off one of two shorthanded situations.
Martlet netminder Taylor Salisbury collected the win in relief of starter Andrea Weckman after the Gryphons took a 3-2 second-period lead. Salisbury was beaten only 17 seconds after entering the game, when Guelph made it 4-2, but the senior from of Surrey, B.C., shut the door the rest of the way, kicking aside 17 of 18 shots. Weckman, who hails from Kitchener, Ont., was beaten three times on 16 shots.
Brooke Siddall made 30 saves in a losing cause for the Gryphons, who finished the tourney with an 0-2 record.
McGill (1-0) can capture the tourney with a win over Queen's (1-0) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
MARTLET MURMURS: McGill dressed only 18 players, two below the standard number. They are without the services of four veterans, including senior Kim Ton-That, plus junior Logan Murray as well as sophomores Mélodie Daoust and Kelsie Moffatt. Murray and Mofatt are injured while Ton-That had to deal with an academic matter and was unable to make the make the bus ride to Kingston. Daoust, who was the CIS rookie of the year last season, is attending a national team training camp in Calgary and won't be back until next week.
