Martlet Hockey vs Lac St. Louis Tigers (Boys Midget Espoirs) (Home)

Won 4-3 (OTS: 3-2) vs Lac St.Louis Tigers

MONTREAL - Sophomore Mélodie Daoust scored once, added a couple of helpers and also notched a goal in a post overtime shootout as the McGill women's hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat the Lac St. Louis Tigers, a boys midget espoir team 4-3, in their preseason opener at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

It marked the second time in five attempts that the Martlets had knocked off a boys team. They previously lost 4-2 and 9-5 in exhibition games played during the 2009-10 season in addition to a 6-3 victory on Jan 21, 2009 and a 3-3 tie in 2007.

The Martlets won the shootout session 3-2 with markers from Daoust, junior Katia Clement-Heydra and senior Kim Ton-That, who tallied the unofficial winner on McGill's final shot.

The teams were scoreless after the opening period and after Daoust broke the ice 64 seconds into the middle stanza, Lac St. Louis led 2-1 after two on a pair by Samuel McFalls-Dove at 2:51 and 17:02.

When Jeremy Kelly gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead at 2:01 of the third, it appeared that it was going to be a tough challenge for the Martlets to bounce back. But they met that challenge head on and narrowed the gap to 3-2 when Daoust and Leslie Oles set up Clement-Heydra at 8:47.

McGill finally got the equalizer when head coach Peter Smith pulled rookie netminder Taylor Hough for an extra attacker late in the third period. The move paid off in spades when Brittany Fouracres converted passes from Daoust and Clement-Heydra.

The Tigers had 30-18 advantage in shots on net but a trio of McGill goalies came up with a number of key saves.

Hough, who played only the final period, the five-minute overtime and the shootout session, was credited with 10 saves on 11 shots to collect her first win in a McGill jersey.

Andrea Weckman, a senior, got the start and kicked aside all 12 shots faced in the first frame. Taylor Salisbury played the middle stanza and made five saves on seven shots.

The Martlets (1-0) will try to make it 2-0 against the opposite sex when they hook up with the Lac St. Louis Royals, another midget espoirs team, on Sept. 20, at McConnell Arena.

MARTLET MURMURS: The Tigers were invited to play the McGill women on the condition that there would be no body contact. There was only one penalty called in the game and that was to... you guessed it - Daoust, who was a one-man... make that a one-woman show, out there.
