Martlet Hockey at Laurier (@ Laurier Invitational; Away)
WATERLOO, Ont. –
Kim Ton-That of Beaconsfield, Que., scored the game-winner to give top-ranked McGill a 4-3 decision over No.5-Laurier in women's exhibition hockey at the Waterloo Recreational Centre, Sunday.
It was the 13
th consecutive victory for the Martlets overall, which allowed them to claim the Laurier Holiday Tournament title with a three-game sweep.
There is no love lost whenever these two rivals hook up and this rough-and-tumble affair featured an unusually-high total of 12 penalties, including four minors for checking to the head, three for bodychecking and two for roughing.
“It was definitely a gritty kind of game and much better paced than our first two games at this tourney,” said McGill head coach
Peter Smith. “We came here to get the rust off a month-long (exam and holiday) break and after nine periods of hockey here, it put us in a spot close to where we left off at the end of November.”
Ton-That, a finance senior, tallied her marker on a power-play at 1:47 of the final period, which gave McGill a 4-2 lead. She also set up
Gabrielle Davidson first of two goals to give the Martlets a 1-0 lead only 104 seconds after the opening faceoff.
The Golden Hawks rallied in the second stanza -- with two goals only a minute apart – from
Robyn Degagne and
Laura Brooker at 12:46 and 13:46. Just 14 seconds later, Davidson, a freshman from Pointe Claire, Que., netted her second to spark a three-goal spurt for McGill.
Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield continued her hot hand with her 25
th goal in 23 games overall, putting the Martlets ahead 3-2 with her fifth of the tourney at 15:23. After Ton-That gave the Martlets a two-goal cushion in the final frame, 'Hawks defenceman
Lauren Baxter narrowed the gap on the power-play at 6:12.
Laurier had a slight 26-24 edge in shots. McGill senior netminder
Andrea Weckman, playing in front of her hometown friends and family, shut the door the rest of the way and ended up with 23 saves for the win, improving her record to 5-3 overall. Laurier's Brown Kayla made 20 saves and took the loss.
McGill went 1-for-9 on the power-play, while Laurier replied on two of three opportunities. The Martlets improved to 18-8 overall, including a 15-0 mark against CIS opponents. They will head south next week, with exhibition games against a pair of NCAA teams, at Yale and Quinnipiac… The team is 1-6 against NCAA opponents this season.
