Martlet Hockey vs. Brown (Home)
Won 3-1 (ENG) vs Brown
MONTREAL - Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., broke open a 1-1 deadlock with the game winner at 18:26 of the second period as the No.1-ranked McGill women's hockey team closed out the first semester with a 3-1 triumph over the visiting Brown University Bears in exhibition play at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
The result marked the 10th straight win overall for the Martlets, who also have a 12-game win streak against Canadian university opponents. It was McGill's first win in seven tries against an NCAA Div. 1 school this season. Brown, which made the trip up from Providence, R.I., plays in the 12-team ECAC Conference.
After a scoreless first period, McGill forward Chelsea Saunders of Ottawa broke the ice with a power-play marker at 8:47 of the middle stanza. The Bears evened the count at 15:59 when Toronto native Jessica Hoyle beat netminder Taylor Hough, a freshman from Toronto, who was making her first appearance in five weeks.
Less than three minutes later, Daoust scored her 18th goal in 17 games overall. It was the ninth winning goal in two years for the physical education sophomore, who is picking up where she left off last year when she tallied 29 goals and 62 points in 30 games en route to capturing CIS rookie of the year honours.
Martlets team captain Darragh Hamilton of Ormstown, Que., added an empty-netter in the dying seconds.
"I liked the tempo and pace of this game much more than in yesterday's win over Carleton," said Peter Smith, behind the bench for his 499th game as head coach of the Martlets. "We talk so much about the process (of how we approach a game) and it was good today. We stuck with the structure better and had lots of energy but that wasn't an easy game for us to play because we only dressed nine forwards (due to injuries).
"Brown ran their bench today way more than we did and I found that our last power-play was so indicative of that as we were just so tired and struggled. But we fought through and did a good job. Everybody on our side enjoyed that game. It was a good way to end the term."
McGill had a 29-24 edge in shots as Hough registered 23 saves to pocket the win, improving to 3-3-0 overall. The Martlets were 1-for-5 on the power-play and killed off both of Brown's PP chances.
McGill, which improved to 1-6 against NCAA squads this season, has three more "international friendlies" on their schedule. They are slated to play at Yale and Quinnipiac (Jan. 4-5), before hostiing Connecticut on Jan. 12.
The team is now off for the December exam and holiday break and will return to action at the Laurier Invitational Tournament in Waterloo, Dec. 28-30.
MARTLET MURMURS: Taylor Hough will be a guest interview on David Grossman's radio show "SUNDAY MORNING", on SPORTSNET 590 THE FAN (www.sportsnet.ca/590/sunday_morning/) in Toronto, on Dec. 16 between 7 am and 8 am. After it airs, the program will also be available via podcast... Four McGill forwards were kept out of the lineup due to injuries, including Leslie Oles, Kim Ton-That, Joanne Cagianos and Stephanie Pohlod.
