Martlet Hockey vs. Ottawa (Away)

Won 4-0 at Ottawa

OTTAWA - Goaltender Taylor Salisbury of Surrey, B.C., kicked aside 24 shots as visiting McGill cruised to a 4-0 shutout over the Ottawa Gee-Gees in university hockey action, Saturday.

The No.2-ranked Martlets enhanced their unblemished record to 6-0 atop the RSEQ standings and improved their lifetime mark against the Gee-Gees to 70-12-7.

It was the second shutout of the season - and ninth career goose-egg in 52 career contests overall - for Salisbury, a 21-year-old science senior who improved her regular-season record to 5-0. She improved her stellar save percentage to .970 and lowered her microscopic goals-against average to 0.60, ranking second in the nation in both categories.

Gabrielle Davidson of Pte. Claire, Que., scored the game-winner at 5:06 of the opening period. It was the sixth goal in as many games for the high-scoring freshman but she didn't stick around to see the fruits of her success as she was ejected only two minutes into the middle frame after being assessed a rare major for body-checking.

Erika Pyke, a sophomore centre from Spryfield, N.S., gave the Martlets a 2-0 lead at 15:46 of the first period and Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., tallied her fifth of the campaign on a power-play at 7:44 of the middle stanza.

Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., put the game out of reach when she made it 4-0 only 70 seconds into the final period. The speedy 5-foot-3 forward continues to lead the RSEQ conference in scoring with a 9-8-17 record in six games, two points ahead of linemate Mélodie Daoust (5-10-15), who collected a pair of assists in the contest.

The game was somewhat closer in the shot department as McGill only had a 29-24 edge in shots.

"Ottawa is a hard team to play against as they work hard and fore-check well," explained McGill head coach Peter Smith. "At times, especially early on, we had a hard time getting out of our zone because we didn't provide enough puck support. But when we did struggle, Taylor was there... she did a real nice job in net for us."

The deciding factor in the game was no doubt McGill's league-leading penalty-killing unit, which held the Gee-Gees at bay, neutralizing all three Ottawa power-plays. The Martlets have now killed off 18 of 19 PK situations over their six league games for a stellar .947 success rate. To rub salt in the wound, they also have scored as many shorthanded markers as PP goals allowed.

The cellar-dwelling Gee-Gees dropped to 0-5-1 and will look for their first win when they play at Concordia (1-5-0) on Sunday.

McGill (6-0) is off until Nov. 10 when they host the Stingers in at 3 p.m. matinee.
