Martlet Hockey at Montreal (Away)

Won 4-1 at Montreal

MONTREAL - Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., scored once and added a pair of helpers as No.2-ranked McGill rallied with four unanswered goals to defeat the No.3 Montreal Carabins in women's hockey at Arena CEPSUM, Friday.

The Martlets, who improved their lifetime record against the Carabins to 22-1-0, now sit alone atop the RSEQ standings with a 5-0 record. It marked the first setback for Montreal, which dropped to 4-1.

The teams were tied at 1-1 after the opening period and McGill had a 2-1 lead after two. Despite the close score, McGill held a 38-17 territorial advantage in shots. They Martlets went 2-for-5 on the power-play and killed off all five shorthanded situations.

"We turned over the puck too much in the first period but then settled down, worked hard and got the result we wanted against a good team," said McGill head coach Peter Smith, who improved to 332-125-31 in 488 games overall behind the bench. "I was particularly happy with our special teams today."

The much-anticipated contest between undefeated teams featured 33 minutes in penalties, including 23 to the Carabins, 15 of them to veteran forward Audrey Fortin who was assessed a major and game misconduct for checking from behind midway through the final frame.

The penalty led to Clement-Heydra's power-play marker which put the game out of reach at 4-1. She also assisted on Mélodie Daoust's fifth of the season, which put the Martlets ahead 2-1 at 12:39 of the middle period. Clement-Heydra then set up freshman Bianca Della Porta of Dorval, Que., to make it 3-1 only 99 seconds into the final frame.

Montreal native Katia Murray had given the Carabins a 1-0 lead at 8:46 of the first but that was nullified about five minutes later when Gabrielle Davidson scored on a power-play. Davidson, a management freshman from Pte. Claire, Que., is ranked third among league leaders in goals, with five in as many games.

Goaltender Taylor Salisbury of Surrey, B.C., made 16 saves for the win, improving to 4-0 on the season. The anatomy and cell biology senior lowered her lead-leading goals-against average to 0.75 and improved her sparkling save percentage to .961. She ranked second in the nation in both categories.

Elodie Rousseau-Sirois of Pohenegamook, Que., made 34 saves in a losing cause for the Carabins and was pegged with her first blemish on the season, dropping to 3-1.

First-place McGill (5-1) plays at cellar-dwelling Ottawa (0-4-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Carabins (4-1-0) head to the nation's capital, as well, to play Carleton (2-2-0) on Sunday.

MARTLET MURMURS: Leslie Oles, a junior forward from Beaconsfield, Que., collected three assists and now leads the RSEQ conference in both goals and points with an 8-7-15 record in five games. She sits two points ahead of teammate Mélodie Daoust (5-8-13) and four ahead of Clement-Heydra (4-7-11)... Spotted in the crowd was McGill alum Shauna Denis, who captained the Martlets to their first CIS hockey title in 2008.
