Martlet Hockey vs. Ottawa (Away)

Won 8-3 at Ottawa

OTTAWA - Mélodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., and Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., each produced hat-tricks as the McGill women's hockey team finally shed their Halloween masks and revealed their true identity en route to an 8-3 thumping of the Ottawa Gee-Gees, Sunday.

The No.1-ranked Martlets, who had looked somewhat lackluster offensively-speaking in their four previous games, were in vintage form at the uOttawa Sports Complex, outshooting the Gee-Gees 47-21 in their own barn, including an overwhelming 29-5 margin in the second stanza, which established a school record for most shots in a period.

"I wasn't too happy with the three goals against but was pretty pleased with our offensive prowess," said McGill mentor Peter Smith. "Daoust and Oles sometimes have the tendency to try and get too fancy with the puck but not today. They had a shot-focused mentality with much more urgency in the offensive zone and it paid off."

McGill led 2-0 after the opening period but catapulted into a 6-0 death-grip by the midway mark of the middle frame before the Gee-Gees found the scoreboard to make it 6-1 after two. The teams traded four goals, back-and-forth, in the final 20 minutes.

Daoust, a physical education sophomore who won CIS rookie-of-the-year honours last year, exploded with five points. She currently sits second in the CIS national scoring race with 21 points, including 12 assists, in just eight contests.

She is only one point in arrears of the red-hot Oles, a junior from Beaconsfield, Que., who had four points and now leads the country in both goals and points with a 13-9-22 dossier in eight games.

Left to pick up the dynamic duo's leftover scraps on the scoresheet was Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno, Que., who registered the game's first goal and team captain Darragh Hamilton, a senior from Ormstown, Que., who made it 3-0. By game's end, 10 of the Martlets picked up points, including Ottawa-born Chelsea Saunders, who collected a career-high four assists.

Replying for the Gee-Gees was Cindy Laurin, Dominique Lefebvre and Maude Laramee, the first and latter coming on the power-play.

Martlets goaltender Taylor Salisbury kicked aside 18 of 21 shots for the win, improving to 6-0 on the season and 19-1 in 20 career regular-season starts. The third-year biology major from Surrey, B.C., lowered her stingy goals-against average on the season to 1.00 and her save percentage to .951, which ranks second in the nation in both categories.

Ottawa native Caitlin Fowler, who made 39 saves between the pipes in only her second start of the season for the Gee-Gees, was collared with the loss and dropped to 0-2.

McGill (8-0) will host the second-place Montreal Carabins (6-1) on Nov. 17 at 3 p.m. Ottawa (1-6-1) is off until Nov. 18, when they head across town to resume their intense rivalry at Carleton (3-3).

MARTLET MURMURS: McGill improved their lifetime mark against the Gee-Gees to 71-12-7... The Martlets dressed only 11 forwards for the game, as high-scoring freshman Gabrielle Davidson was under the weather. The Pointe Claire product sits seventh in among the league's scoring leaders with a 7-2-9 record in seven games... McGill now outscored opponents 43-10 and is the highest scoring team in the nation with an average of 5.38 goals-per game...Defensively, they are ranked second-best in the CIS with a 1.25 goals-against average.
