UVM netted the game-winner on the power play at 4:53 of the first period. A Dayna Colang point shot was deflected in front by Vermont forward Brittany Zuback. McGill netminder Taylor Hough, a freshman from Toronto, made the initial save but Erin Wente buried the rebound to give Vermont enough for the victory.
From there on out the goaltenders stole the show. Even despite a pair of extended 5-on-3 power plays for both teams, Lanthier and Hough were equal to the task.
Lanthier who was named the first star, picked up her first shutout as a Catamount. Hough made 14 saves for the Martlets and took the loss, dropping to 2-3-0 in exhibition play.
"I thought we played very well and deserved a better fate," said Peter Smith, head coach of the Martlets. "But we didn't get the bounces and their goaltender was very sharp. When you don't score, you can't expect to win."
McGill had a 31-15 edge in shots but came up empty on all six power-play chances as Vermont has now successfully killed off its last 19 penalties.
“We really focused on playing smart and defending well,” said head coach Jim Plumer. “Tonight to get the shutout against a good team was a good boost to our confidence as we get a little break this weekend.”
UVM, which is 4-5-1 all-time against teams from Quebec, returns to action next Wednesday (7 p.m.) as they face RPI in a non-conference game at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The Martlets, who own a 4-0 record against CIS teams but a 0-6 mark against NCAA opponents, will resume regular season play on Saturday when the host the Carleton Ravens (2-1) in a 3 p.m. start. McGill is ranked No.2 in Canada with a 2-0 record in league play and needs a win to keep pace with the first-place Montreal Carabins (3-0). This weekend, the Martlets will be celebrating their alumni homecoming. many members of their three national championship teams (2008, 2009, 2011) are expected to attend.
