PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Amber Yung, a senior
defenceman from Rockville, Va., scored twice as the Providence
College women's ice hockey team rallied to defeat McGill 6-4 at
Schneider Arena, Saturday.
The Martlets, who were without their top forward, defenceman and
goaltender - each at the Canadian national team training camp in
Calgary - were outshot 44-16.
Freshman Rebecca Morse of Westfield, N.J.,
opened the scoring for the Friars at 6:56 but the Martlets scored
three unanswered goals to end the first period, on efforts by
Chelsey Saunders, a sophomore from Ottawa and
freshman Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., in
addition to a marker from Cathy Chartrand, a
junior rearguard from Lac Nominingue, Que.
Trailing 3-1, Providence recovered quickly to start the second.
Senior Ashley Cottrell of Sterling, Heights,
Mich., scored just 2:28 into the period. Just over two minutes
later, Yung's seeing-eye shot from the right point found its way
through a screen and into the top shelf, knotting the game 3-3.
Providence took the lead just before the midway mark of the
middle period when junior Kate Bacon of
Chanhassen, Minn., scored but the Martlets replied with a
power-play goal when Oles netted her second of the game at
12:42.
Yung netted the eventual game-winner midway through the third
stanza with a one-timer at 11:37. Senior Alyse
Ruff of Tualatin, Ore., added an empty-netter at 19:27 to
round out the scoring.
Friars' goaltender Christine England was yanked
after the second McGill goal at 13:34, having allowed two goals on
four shots. She was replaced by freshman goalie Nina
Riley of Lexington, Mass., who turned aside 10 shots in
her first collegiate outing for the victory. McGill's
Andrea Weckman, a neuroscience sophomore from
Kitchener, Ont., took the loss, allowing five goals on 43
shots.
The Martlets will wrap-up their three-game cross-border tour
with a Sunday afternoon affair at Northeastern University in
Boston.
