MONTREAL – Rugby players Monty Weatherall, from England, and Tai Mavalwala of St. Lazare, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending on Sept. 12, 2021.

Weatherall scored a game-high 13 points as McGill mastered the Montreal Carabins 48-6 before a sold-out crowd of 700 to open the RSEQ men's rugby season at Percival Molson Stadium on Saturday. A six-foot, 183-pound fly-half who also serves as a back-up kicker with the McGill football team, Weatherall converted five of seven tries and connected on one of two penalty kicks. The 20-year-old international development studies junior hails from Amersham, a small market town in county of Buckinghamshire.

Mavalwala, a 5-foot-8 starter on the second row, opened the scoring with a try for the Martlets in a 52-7 loss to visiting Bishop’s in the regular season debut at Percival Molson Stadium last Saturday. It was the first career start for the 21-year-old biology junior. A product of John Abbott College, she enrolled at McGill in 2019.
