SHERBROOKE –
Donna Ntambue won gold and bronze medals, pacing the McGill University women's track team to capture the Sherbrooke Invitational meet at the Pavillion Univestrie on Saturday.
It was the second competition of the indoor season – the first official league meet – and the Martlets produced eight podiums, two of them golden, along with three silvers and three bronze medal performances.
McGill racked up 107 points to finish first of nine schools The Montreal Carabins were a close second with 104 points, followed by Laval (71), Sherbrooke (69), UQTR (37), Carleton (36), UQAC (10), UQAM (8) and Concordia (1).
Ntambue, a 21-year-old economics freshman from Montreal who transferred from NCAA stints at Utah and Northeastern, won the 60-metre sprint in 7.54 seconds. That result ranks as the season's fourth fastest U SPORTS time this season, according to
trackie.com. She bettered her time of 7.61 in the first meet of the season at the McGill Martlet Open on Nov. 26, and is within striking distance of the team record (7.46) set by
Jorden Savoury last season.
Ntambue's bronze occurred in the 300m race, crossing the finish line in 41.05 seconds, less than two seconds shy the school record (39.48).
Teammate
Abigail McIntosh, a sophomore from Toronto, won gold in the 1,000m, posting a time of 3:02.90.
McGill's silver medal performances were achieved by
Vanessa Lu Langley from Ottawa,
Leslie Herpe, a native of France and
Makayla Mitchell from Nanaimo, B.C.
Langley, a chemical engineering junior, completed the 60m hurdles in 9.32 seconds.
Herpe, a science freshman, cleared a height of 1.55m in the high jump
. Mitchell, a pharmacology senior, leaped a distance of 4.86m in the long jump.
The other bronze medals went to
Rosalie Lupien, an economics junior from Longueuil, Que., in the pole vault (3.65m) and
Ella Villeneuve, a science freshman from Richmond, Vt., in the weight throw (9.68m).
Next on tap is the Middlebury Winter Classic on Jan. 21, followed by the McGill Team Challenge, slated for Jan. 27-28 at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, located inside the Currie Gymnasium.
