MONTREAL -- Luis Guimont-Mota and Simon Lamontagne, both members of the McGill University football team, were among eight Quebec university athletes to receive scholarships valued at $1,500 apiece, from the Montreal Alouettes Bursary Program.

Including high school and CEGEP football, a total of 26 bursaries totaling $34,250, were handed out this fall. It marked the 10th year of the Alouettes involvement in the program, which is co-directed by the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence.

The third-year business management student was voted all-conference last year after becoming the first member of the Redmen in 11 years to lead the Quebec league in rushing with 824 yards on 147 carries, a 5.6 average and four touchdowns.

Lamontagne, who hails from Boisbriand, Que.,was the only player at the university level to merit an academic excellence award. A senior, he earned Academic All-Canadian honours and made the Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll, graduating last June with a 3.69 cumulative grade-point average and a science degree. Lamontagne won the team's Charlie Baillie Trophy as best team player in 2013 and has returned to work on a master's program in physical therapy.  The 5-foot-11, 181-pound defensive back made 21.5 tackles in eight games last year. He was also credited with three knockdowns, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

The bursary awards announcement was presented by RDS, which has been a prestige-level communications partner of the Foundation for numerous years. RDS broadcasts select video clips of bursary recipients and is the official broadcaster of the 29th Quebec University Sports Awards Gala, which will be held on Nov. 25 at the Sheraton Hotel Laval.
