MONTREAL – The No.2-ranked Trinity Western Spartans swept McGill 3-0 in women's volleyball exhibition play at Love Competition Hall on Jan. 2. The set scores were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-19. When the dust settled, both teams agreed to play an extra set, which McGill took 25-23.
The Spartans, who improved their overall record to 17-4, featured a much taller lineup, with six players measuring at over six-feet, compared to McGill, which has nobody over that height.
Marie-Christine Lapointe, a third-year kinesiology major from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., paced the Martlets with seven kills, 10 digs, three stuff blocks and a 2.29 passing ratio out of 3. Teammate
Genevieve Plante of Montreal added seven kills, eight digs and one ace. Rookie
Catherine Amyot also posted a solid 2.25 passing ratio.
“I thought we should have competed better against them but I found our girls very tense, very tight right from the beginning,” said
Rachele Beliveau, head coach of the Martlets. “They had a height advantage and their style of defence was very high… so it was like they were always charging at us. But I think if we had served tougher and controlled the first pass better, we would've been able to put some pressure on them. We loosened up by the end and you could see a difference in our play when the pressure was off in the extra set.”
The Martlets, which dropped to 16-14 overall, will host the Manitoba Bisons in another non-conference affair at Love Competition Hall on Thursday at 1 p.m. Admission is free of charge. The Bisons are 14-8 overall and sit fifth in the 12-team Canada West conference with a 7-5 record,
