Born Dec.1, 1976 in Beirut, Lebanon, Samir Chahine was raised in Egypt and the U.S. before settling in Toronto. He went on to play five seasons at McGill, before embarking on an eight-year pro career in the Canadian Football League.
A 6-foot-1, 295-pound offensive lineman, he played with the Redmen from 1993 to 1997. He earned OQIFC all-star honours three times and is the only McGill football player to merit CIAU all-Canadian status three times (1995, 1996, 1997).
During his collegiate career, Chahine was one of the strongest players in the CIAU. He had the best combined bench-squat-pull on the Redmen at 1,350 pounds, which includes a 430-pound bench press, a 605-pound squat and a 315-pound power pull.
When football season ended each fall, he joined the McGill track & field team for the winter indoor season, where he was a four-time Quebec conference champion in the shot-put, before graduating in 1998 with a degree in physical education.
A second-round selection by the Edmonton Eskimos, 11th overall, in the 1998 CFL Draft, he had a lengthy pro career, from 1998 to 2005, with the Edmonton Eskimos, Toronto Argonauts, Hamilton Tiger Cats, Calgary Stampeders and Ottawa Renegades.
After retiring, Chahine put his education degree to good use and became a high school teacher and football coach at Villanova College in King City, Ont., near the Toronto area.
In 2008, he was the head coach and offensive line coach of the Bergamo Lions, a pro team in Italy and in 2009 he coached the o-line for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. He also served with Team Canada's national junior team.
