Peter Howlett was born June 11, 1942 in Westmount, Que., and went on to earn a civil law degree from McGill in 1966. Over his football career at McGill, the 6-foot-2, 218-pounder played at both defensive end and fullback, where he was voted twice by the Canadian Press as a league all-star. In 1965, Howlett received the Omega trophy as most valuable player of the Senior Intercollegiate Football League. That season, he averaged 95 yards per game in rushing and receiving combined. He finished second among the league's rushing leaders, averaging 4.6 yards per carry.
In 1966, he had the rare distinction of serving as captain and was voted most valuable player of both the alpine ski and the football teams. He was drafted by the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1966 and then played three seasons with the Montreal Alouettes. Long after his pro football career was over, he continued his athletic career. He played briefly with the Canadian national rugby team and was voted the Quebec rugby player of the year in 1974. Howlett was named "Montreal Irishman of the Year" in 2006 and was invested as a member of the Order of Canada in 2008.
