Bio:
The 1933-34 Redmen hockey team, arguably the best team ever iced at McGill, opened the season with a 23-game undefeated streak (20-0-3), a team record that still stands.
Under the guidance of legendary coach Dr. Bobby Bell, they became known as the "Red Raiders" and compiled a 23-3-4 overall record, outscoring opponents 141-51. They won the Canadian Intercollegiate Hockey Union championship (Queen's Cup) and the Quebec Amateur Hockey Association title, plus the Quebec Senior Hockey League regular season and playoff titles. They were hailed in newspapers as the "mythical North American champions".
After finishing first with a 10-0-2 record in the 7-team QSHL, McGill won the semifinal series over the Verdun Maple Leafs in two straight games and won the QSHL championship the hard way. They lost the opening game 4-2 to the Montreal Canadiens but bounced back with 1-0 and 4-1 victories over the farm team of the Habs.
McGill then defeated the Quebec Aces (with an 11-0 win and a 0-0 tie) to capture the Quebec provincial championship and qualify for the Allan Cup playdowns. The two-game, total-goal series was played at the Montreal Forum and McGill lost both Allan Cup quarterfinal games to the Moncton Hawks by similar 3-1 scores.
The Redmen featured an omnipotent power play and were led by a quartet known as "The Four Horsemen" -- composed of Ken Farmer, captain Nels Crutchfield, Hugh Farquharson and Jack McGill.
Other team members included Frank Shaughnessy, Jr., Tom Robertson, Gordon Meiklejohn, Jean-Paul Elie, Rob McLernon, Allan Hall, Fred Wigle, Cam Dickison, Rollie Lamb, goaltenders Maurice Powers and Hollie McHugh, plus team manager Edward L. Gray and honourary president Dr. C.K.P. Henry.
