Robert Stanford MacLellan was born in Montreal on March 26, 1930. He graduated with a bachelor of arts in 1952 and subsequently earned a degree in dentistry in 1961. Over his four years at McGill (1949-53), he was a three-time all-star centre on the football team and a three-time all-star goaltender on the hockey team.
Measuring 6-foot-2 and weighing 210 pounds, he led the Senior Intercollegiate Hockey League with a 3.17 goals-against average in 1952-53. That season, he won the W.S. Lea Memorial trophy as the football Team MVP and he captured the Forbes trophy as McGill's male athlete of the year. He went on to play football for the Montreal Alouettes from 1955 to 1960 and was the Montreal Canadiens back-up goalie for visiting NHL teams. He later served as an assistant coach on McGill's 1960 Yates Cup championship football team.
Reporter Mitch Klein wrote in The McGill Daily of March 12, 1953: "In these days of bickering over decisions of any importance, unanimous selections are few and far between. McGill has come up with one of these rarities in the awarding of the Major Stuart Forbes Trophy to Bob MacLellan, a choice which meets with the approval of all those close to the sports scene in these parts. To the members of the sports-writing fraternity, the selection of MacLellan was a mere formality, he is held in such high esteem."
