Richard Baltzan was born in Saskatoon on July 10, 1935. He went on to play five seasons as a right-winger and centre with the hockey Redmen from 1953 to 1958, where he was a two-time all-star in the Senior Intercollegiate Hockey League. He graduated from McGill with a science degree in 1955, followed by a medical degree in 1959.
Baltzan won the team's Bert Fyon Trophy as most improved player in 1953-54, served as team captain in 1955-56 and was a three-time winner of the Bobby Bell trophy as team MVP.
During the 1956-57 season, he scored points in 16 consecutive games en route to posting a career-best scoring record of 14-17-31 in 12 games. At the time of his graduation, he was the third-leading scorer in school history with 100 points in 60 career games. He ranked fifth some 25 years after his last game and currently ranks 43rd on the all-time points list with the modern-day doubling of the playing schedule.
