Dr. Robert Blagrave Bell was born in Westmount, Que., on August 13, 1903. He attended prep school at Mt. Hermon, Mass., and graduated from McGill with a B.A. in 1926 and a Doctor of Dentistry in 1928.
As a student, he played inter-faculty football, was assistant manager of rugby football team and a cheerleader. Bell played seven seasons for the Redmen hockey team (1922-23 to 1927-28 &1929-30) but made his fame as the all-time winningest hockey coach in McGill history.
In nine seasons (1929-37, 1942-43, 1944-45), he guided the Redmen to a 137-58-25 record, winning six Queen's Cup championships, one International Intercollegiate Ice Hockey League championship (Alexis Thompson Trophy) and two provincial titles in the Quebec Senior Hockey League.
A respected administrator he served as president of the Canadian Intercollegiate Hockey Union, the Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union, the Canadian Davis Cup committee and Quebec Squash Racket Association.
He died in Montreal on March 21, 1948. The following year, McGill dentistry students offered the Bobby Bell Memorial Bowl to be presented annually in his memory to the Redmen hockey Team MVP.
