MONTREAL -- McGill Sports Hall of Fame inductee
Michael Soles threw down the gauntlet last week and asked the public and Montreal Alouettes to reintroduce the ice bucket challenge in support of
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease.
Among the celebrities on hand to participate in the 2017 edition of the ice bucket challenge was new CFL Commissioner
Randy Ambrosie and Alouettes general manager
Kavis Reed, along with broadcsters
Rick Moffat and
Davis Sanchez, who do play-by-play and colour commentary, respectively, for the Alouettes on TSN Radio.
Soles led McGill to a Vanier Cup national championship in 1987 before embarking of a CFL career where he helped the Edmonton Eskimos win a Grey Cup title in 1993, then played for the Alouettes from 1996 to 1999. He has been battling ALS for the past decade and has challenged McGill athletes, fans, alumni and friends to raise more funds than the Montreal Carabins football program, from now until Sept. 15 at 5 p.m.
Funds raised will go to the Tony Proudfoot Post-Doctoral Fellowships in ALS Research at the Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University, and the McGill University Health Centre. The fellowships provide funds for cutting-edge research at the MNI. The hope and belief is that the research will lead to new therapies and renewed hope for the thousands of Canadians affected by this devastating degenerative disease.
