Melodie Daoust was named named RSEQ player of the year

MONTREAL -- The Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec announced their major awards in women's hockey and the top-seeded McGill Martlets dominated with six all-stars, two awards and one all-rookie honouree.

McGill placed four players on the first team, including forward Melodie Daoust, a 22-year-old native of Valleyfield, Que., who was voted RSEQ player of the year. Gabrielle Davidson of Pointe Claire, Que., earned a berth on the all-rookie squad and becomes the fifth McGill player in six years to earn the conference's rookie of the year award.

Joining Daoust on the first unit were McGill teammates Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que.,  Brittney Fouracres of Calgary and goaltender Taylor Salisbury or Surrey, B.C.

Martlets forward Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., who had 36 points, including 18 goals, in 17 games, was designated to the second team, along with teammate Stacie Tardif, a rearguard from St. Anne de Bellevue, Que.

Other major award winners included Ottawa goalie Cassie Séguin (leadership & citizenship award) and Isabelle Leclaire of the Montréal Carabins (coach of the year). Overlooked in the voting was McGill bench boss Peter Smith, who guided his team to an unblemished 20-0 record, despite the graduation of numerous all-stars, including forward Ann-Sophie Bettez, defencemen Cathy Chartrand and Gillian Ferrari, and Olympic netminder Charline Labonte.

Daoust, who was the CIS rookie of the year last season, had an outstanding sophomore campaign, winning the RSEQ and CIS scoring title with 54 points, including 21 goals in 20 games. Her 33 assists are an RSEQ single-season record and the 54 points ties the league record set in 2008-09 when McGill's Ann-Sophie Bettez posted a 24-30-54 dossier. Daoust, who is also a member of the Canadian nation under-22 program, led the CIS with a stellar 2.70 points-per-game average.

Davidson, a 5-foot-4 forward, finished fourth among league leaders with 17 goals and 5 assists for 22 points in 16 games. She tallied nine power-play markers and added one shorthanded effort.

Clement-Heydra, a 5-foot-7 forward, led the nation with 24 goals and was second among CIS leaders in points with 45 in 20 contests.

Fouracres, a 5-foot-3 sophmore rearguard, registered a 3-9-12 record in 18 games.

Salisbury, a science senior, posted a 12-0 record with three shutouts, a stingy 1.58 goals-against average and a sparkling .924 save percentage.
