MONTREAL -- Adrian Hynes-Guery scored a game-high 24 points and Vincent Dufort registered a “double-double” as division-leading McGill easily disposed of fourth-place UQAM 72-43 in a sudden-death men's basketball semifinal at Love Competition Hall, Wednesday.

Bishop's knocked off visiting Concordia 70-63 in the other semi, so the Gaiters will travel to Montreal on Saturday to take on the Redmen in the Quebec league championship game at 5 p.m., which follows the women's final between Concordia and the Martlets (2 p.m.). It marks the first time in school history that McGill will be hosting both the men's and women's championship games.

Hynes-Guery, a Montrealer and first-year transfer out of the NCAA's American International College, had an all-round superb game with four rebounds, five assists, a pair of blocked shots and one steal. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound point-guard shot 9-for-20 from the floor, including a 2-for-6 effort from three-point range, and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Dufort, a sophomore from Smiths Falls, Ont., poured in 16 points and pulled a game-high 10 rebounds off the glass. He made six of 15 shots, including a 3-for-7 effort from the arc and went 1-for-2 from the line.

“I thought we defended well as a team this evening,” said McGill head coach David DeAveiro, who improved to 53-46 in 99 career contests behind the McGill bench. “We focused on shutting down their big three shooters and I think we did a tremendous job in doing that. Our kids struggled a little bit offensively, trying to find a groove or rhythm but Adrian played an exceptional game. He proved to everyone this evening that he is one of the best players in our conference and maybe throughout the country. Also, Dufort led us again tonight with maybe his fourth or fifth double-double of the season. It was overall a great team effort defensively and we just did enough offensively. I think we just wore them down and broke their spirit.”

McGill held a slim 18-15 lead after the opening quarter and took a 34-25 advantage into halftime but exploded out of the blocks in the third, outscoring the Citadins 19-7.

“We came out of halftime talking about some missed layups and free-throw opportunities that could've given us a bigger lead at the half, so we just wanted to gear down and we knew the importance of winning that third quarter,” explained DeAveiro.  “All throughout the year we've been fairly successful in the third quarter and we've kind of imposed our will on teams, so it was important to come out in the second half and establish ourselves defensively and get some easy baskets off our defence.”

Also in double figures for the Redmen was team captain Winn Clark, with 10 points, to go along with five boards, four steals and a block.

Alexandre Bernard was the top UQAM sniper with 14 points, while teammate Richard Addai added nine.

McGill had a healthy 41-30 margin in rebounds, a 10-3 advantage in steals and a 5-2 edge in blocked shots. They shot 37.7 per cent from the field (26/69), 42.1 from three-point range (8/19) and only 57.1 from the line (12/21), compared to UQAM, which shot 31.0 and 15.4 respectively, while connecting on just five of 10 free-throws.

Advance tickets for Saturday's men's final between Bishop's and McGill are on sale at the Redbird Sports Shop, located in the McGill Sports Centre. The price is the same as a regular-season game: $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors.

Should McGill win, they would advance to the CIS Final Eight championship (in Ottawa, March 7-10). It would mark McGill's first trip to a CIS tourney since qualifying for the CIS regional playdowns in 1985. The last time they actually reached the national championship was in 1979.

REDMEN RAP: McGill split their four-game series with Bishop's, outscoring the Gaiters by a slim 262-260 margin. At home, the Redmen lost 84-79 on Nov. 29 and won 78-60 on Feb. 16. The two road games in Lennoxville included a 63-60 McGill victory on Jan. 16 and a 56-43 loss on Jan. 30.
