Box Score
MONTREAL – Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield Que., continued playing her hot hand, scoring a pair of aces and adding an assist as No.1-ranked McGill women's hockey team spanked the No.3-ranked Montreal Carabins 6-1 in Game 1 of the RSEQ league championship series at McConnell Arena, Wednesday.

It was the 29th straight victory against CIS opponents for the Martlets, who can wrap up the best-of-three affair for the Ed Enos Trophy at CEPSUM Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. If a third game is needed, it is slated for Sunday at McConnell (3 p.m.), where McGill has now won 19 consecutive home playoff games since 2005,

“It was a good team effort tonight,” said McGill bench boss Peter Smith. “If we play at our tempo, we're a hard team to play against and we played at our tempo in the first period in particular. We got a lot of pucks to the net and did a real good job. In the second (with a 4-0 lead) we didn't quite have with the same sense of urgency. But we were back on our game in the final period.”

Oles, who leads the nation in playoff scoring with 12 points, including six goals in only three post-season contests, set up a Chelsey Saunders marker only 58 seconds after the opening faceoff. Minutes later, Oles put McGill ahead with what proved to be the game-winner at 3:34 of the first period, which prompted Carabins head coach Isabelle Leclaire to yank starting goaltender Elodie Rousseau-Sirois who was beaten twice on three shots. She was replaced by Sarah Mailloux, who didn't fare much better, conceding four goals on 30 shots the rest of the way.

After Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., made it 3-0 at 9:29, Oles added her sixth of the playoffs at 16:40 to all but put the game out of reach.

With McGill ahead 4-0, Carabins sophomore Marion Allemoz tallied on a power-play at 5:02 of the second period, spoiling a shutout bid by senior netminder Taylor Salisbury of Surrey, B.C., who registered 22 saves for the win.

Calgary natives Logan Murray and Stefanie Pohlod rounded out the scoring for McGill with goals in the second and third periods, respectively.

McGill had a 33-23 edge in shots and went 0-for-5 on the power-play, while the Carabins were 1-for 5.

“We had some real good performances, Oles was sharp, worked her butt off," added Smith. "Brittney Fouracres was real good on the back end and Salisbury didn't necessarily have a lot of work in nets but made the key saves when she needed to.”

MARTLET MURMURS: The Martlets improved to 27-1 lifetime against the Carabins, including an unblemished 8-0 mark in post-season play… McGill has reached the League Championship Series for the 15th time in 16 years and are looking to capture their 10th Ed Enos Trophy as RSEQ champions (which they have won for the past seven years)... The Martlets have claimed the Enos Trophy in 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2003 and in 1985... The trophy is named after the former long-time Concordia athletics director who died of heart failure in Montreal on March 6, 2007, at age 72.
